Three Quarter Skies "Crows" (Drab Majesty Remix)
Drab Majesty have slowed the pulse and excised the heart of “Crows”, the “dark and noisy slice of rural psychedelia” by Three Quarter Skies. The surprising result reveals the warmth of Simon Scott’s voice against the characteristically cool synth sounds of Drab Majesty.
Most notably, the emotional twist of notes in the refrain which punctures the listless mood of the original, has been suspended from the remix. “I’ve seen a murder roosting. A murder of crows. In her eyes. I see a murder roosting. A murder of crows. In his eyes.” Also, an oscillating wash of micro-dosed euphoria quiets the hollow FSA-esque cracking of the original mix. An alternate video by Chris Tomsett (Innerstrings) perfectly complements the remix.
Reflecting on the song back when it was released in June 2024, Simon Scott noted that it was “vivid and surreal” and had been inspired by witnessing his parents die. “It’s the most personal song I’ve ever written,” he quoted to Sonic Cathedral.
The Drab Majesty remix of “Crows” is on the forthcoming On Fire EP (Sonic Cathedral), to be released in early June 2025. You can pre-order the limited edition EP on its own or together with the Three Quarter Skies full length Fade In.
p.s. Catch Drab Majesty during their summer tour if you’re not able to see them at a Slowdive show this spring.
