"The Thousand First" by Cindy
“The Thousand First” is a lonesome but content tune from Cindy’s latest album Another Country. The song, like many others on the album, carries a calm and cool sound reminiscent of the Velvet Underground.
“It’s about the nature of repetition and also scenes I pass by on the street that connect ideas in their own way,” said Karina Gill, lead songwriter, vocalist and guitarist of Cindy.
Karina Gill’s vocal style and lyrics convey a casual mood - one that is occupied with observing the external while also processing the questions of an internal dialogue.
“Like any song, there are a lot of threads in there,” explained Karina. “When Cindy was on tour in the Midwest in 2024, we saw a cute kid calling out for someone in their family to hold their hand. Then, much later, I was on the bus passing a man also calling out for someone’s hand, but in a very different situation.”
Cindy is based in San Francisco and currently on Tough Love Records in the UK. The band will tour Japan in October this year. “This is our first tour in Japan and for each of us the first time visiting there,” said Karina.
Another Country was issued with a limited edition mixtape, curated by the band. “The mixtape was a way to collect and share songs from people we are connected with through music,” noted Karina. You can follow Cindy on Instagram.
