Swallow by Steve Queralt
The postal overlords must really like Steve Queralt because my Swallow CD arrived in Amsterdam exactly on release day. Unprecedented.
Swallow starts with the weather, as you might do when you don’t know someone well, and ends with storm conditions, the type of uncertain waters that are best endured with the help of a trustworthy friend.
Full of anticipatory atmospheres and cinematic twists that quietly splinter or dramatically crack open, Swallow is cool and mysterious.
The album feels like a series of sonic journal entries that overcome doubt, longing, or ambivalence.
Listeners might hear “Weather Diaries” in “A Porsche Shaped Hole” and M83 in “I Don’t Know How to Sing”… and dare I say it again, “The Final Countdown” in those modestly regal synths of “Swiss Air”.
