Sparkly Green Couch and stuff rockstars read
"Sparkly Green Couch" is a song by Secret Square, a project of Hilarie Sidney (The Apples In Stereo and The High Water Marks) and Lisa Janssen (Neutral Milk Hotel) The song was included on the only album released by the two back in 1995.
"When I think back a little to that time, I do remember I was reading 20 Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation," Hilarie told me.
I included the song on episode 17 of _____ mood., my memory of The Apples In Stereo being jogged by DAIISTAR, and well, ending up at Secret Square. As I told Hilarie, the song has a Moe Tucker + Windy Weber + Kim Gordon vibe to it that I love. We can probably include Georgia Hubley too.
"I was spending a lot of time with my book and guitar on our sparkly green couch in our Pet Sounds studio in Denver. I was also taking a deep dive into The Rosicrucians and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn," she laughed. "So, that is mostly likely where the song came from."
Hilarie's drumming for The Apples In Stereo always blew me away. As someone who learned to play enough to be in a crude garage go-go band, it was an inspiration seeing her play and sing! Fierce. Cool. Kind. Her conversation with Jennifer Baron (Ladybug Transistor) over at Chickfactor is worth your time. My heart sank reading their stories and memories of being a woman in a band in the 1990s. I'm glad I got the chance to tell her what an inspiration she was.
Nowadays Hilarie lives in Norway and plays more guitar than drums. She's part of The High Water Marks - check out their song "American Candy" or go see them at Paris Popfest in September this year.
