Something more sprawling: "Salt" by Blank Gloss
Blank Gloss is a California duo composed of “two washed up punkers trying to enjoy a nice, quiet time together”. Those two “punkers” are Morgan Fox and Patrick Hills and they seem to be pretty good at creating quiet washes of music laden with emotions, but with enough space to fill in the blanks as you see fit. The name makes a lot of sense. You can chill out, be sad, or just have a quiet companion with Blank Gloss.
The duo’s song “Salt” closes episode 9 of _____ mood.
“Salt" was the last song we recorded for the album,” explained Morgan.
The song appears on the Blank Gloss album Cornered, which was released in March 2023 by Kompakt Records.
“Most of the recording session was done improvisationally on guitar and piano being played live together," said Morgan. "But for "Salt" and "No Appetite" we wanted to try and make something more sprawling so I got out my old microKORG and a delay pedal and we recorded long overlapping loops of droning guitar and synthesizer before we went back and added a bit of piano on top. Luckily, it came together very quickly for us and we really like how it turned out.”
Patrick and Morgan recorded, mixed and mastered the album Cornered at Patrick’s studio in Sacramento, Earth Tone Recording Company.
If you’re a regular listener of _____ mood. and you enjoyed “Maze Echoes” by Jo Johnson and Hilary Robinson, included in episode 7, I think you’ll appreciate Blank Gloss.
