Self-described as “painfully comforting” and “perfect for annoying people who think they have better music taste than everyone else,” Slow Country of Trondheim, Norway is taking risks that others in the Norwegian music scene refuse to take. For the rest of you out there, Slow Country could also be described as sounding like a cross between My Bloody Valentine and Beach House.
Slow Country’s debut single, "Who Goes There?" is out 4 June. It’s a noisy, discordant 3-minute shoegaze temper tantrum. Slightly menacing dream noise characterises the single, combining heavy shoegaze with what the band describes as “floating qualities of dream pop”.
The DIY-driven Slow Country have backgrounds ranging from jazz ensembles, big bands, and indie pop to acoustic duos and disco-funk. Led by Johan Kalvsjøhagen, Slow Country’s members, Henrik Wike Wallumrød, Finn Løvli and Simen Kvalvåg Navestad, all met while studying music technology at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and decided that soothing noise was their shared playground for experimentation.
Catch Slow Country, and annoying people who think they have better taste in music, live in Oslo on 12 June at Revolver. You can stream “Who Goes There?” on your favourite platform and follow Slow Country on Instagram for news on upcoming shows and releases.
