Sad stories you can dance to: A Deeper Heaven's "Let Go"
I couldn't quite put my finger on it at first, but A Deeper Heaven's "Let Go" brought me way back to 1989 and The Ocean Blue's hits "Between Something and Nothing" and "Drifting, Falling"... wistful pop that will nudge you to indulge in a moment of dance. You'll find "Let Go" in episode 15 of _____ mood.
A Deeper Heaven is Marc Wheeler of Utah in the USA. He's always had drive for music, but the discipline and focus for it came only after losing someone to suicide.
"It is an emotional life or death need that is driving this project," Marc explained to me when I asked about "Let Go".
What's the story behind the song "Let Go"?
“Let Go” is about how we sometimes justify in our heads all the reasons other people should let go of us, then we distance ourselves and tell ourselves we don’t deserve them, or they will be happier without us. I think this same thing happens with our relationship with ourselves too, self sabotaging or making excuses, telling ourselves to let go of our dreams and good fortune. This was my first song of this project setting a trend of sad stories you can dance to.
How did the song develop?
"Let Go" started in 2020 with the guitar lead, which is odd since I often start with bass. I was pretty into Cafe Racer’s Shadow Talk album that month, mixed in with my main influences. My friend Alex Ericksen wrote the drums, but Casper Iskov in 2023 recorded his own performance with his amazing mic setup. It turned out heavier than planned, but a fantastic surprise. Casper also mixed and mastered - he is a talented man, I’m obsessed with his song “Father” and many others so check out his solo stuff. "Let Go" has more psych effects and sections than most of my songs due to when it was written and some shorter term influences leading up to it.
Is that the same Casper that worked with Maud Anyways?
Yes, Casper is the same Casper. I think we were both introduced to Casper by Thierry Haliniak of My Raining Stars. They are all wonderful people and I'm a fan of their music.
And what about the artwork for this single?
The artwork is a picture that represents me holding onto someone dear, who was determined to have me let go of her. It was the hardest thing I ever went through x20. She won in the end, sadly. Your mind can be your worst enemy and actually kill you.
