At the top of episode 25 of blank mood you’ll hear “outnumbered” by copperplate. It’s a catchy pop tune with sweet vocals that beckon a crush and lead into a daydream.
how did you find me when you say you were outnumbered?
how did you find me when you say our days were numbered?
I learned about copperplate from my friend Matt, who noted that he couldn’t find much info about the artist. I take recommendations from Matt seriously, so I got to work on it, landing on “outnumbered”.
copperplate is the project of Lauren Grace and this woman can craft a killer pop tune. Lauren answered a few questions about her work, so read on and give her a listen.
What is the story behind "outnumbered"?
outnumbered explores two lovers finding their way back to each other. even when separated by distance or doubt, there's always a way that leads them back together.
You seem to have a knack for melody and catchy pop tunes - where would you say this comes from and how have you developed that?
it comes from being inspired by a combination of past and new generations of dreampop artists. i’ve always been drawn to the way these artists blend emotions—from slowdive and airiel to wild nothing.
You have four albums, each with 13 songs, all released last year. What allows you to be such a prolific writer/producer/composer?
it's mind-blowing yet so fulfilling to be able to share these songs with the public. i think what allows me to be such a prolific writer is simply my love for what i do. whether it's a long drive or a quiet train ride, i love making music that can accompany those moments.
What differentiates the four collections?
a pleasant journey captures a sense of movement and adventure.
contentment represents the pursuit of tranquility.
subtle senses emphasizes the beauty in everyday moments while directing emotions.
lastly, ars poetica explores the interplay between words, love, and music in a poetic way.
ars poetica, your latest collection of songs, is a Bandcamp-only release - what made you decide to go that way?
i'm planning to release my albums on bandcamp now, as i'm more interactive on my website than on any streaming platforms. i'm still planning to release singles on streaming sites moving forward.
What is the story of your artist name, copperplate?
i love calligraphy, and copperplate comes to mind when i think of it. it's a unique name for an artist, but i like it.
Your social media presence seems to be limited - what have you chosen for that as an artist?
i’ve never been particularly fond of using social media sites, even growing up. i have used some of them in the past, but i never quite got the knack of it.
Who / what are some of your inspirations for songwriting?
from reading poetry, books, and slam notes (yes, it still exists!)
What might we expect from copperplate this year and beyond?
more albums, hopefully! and cds!
copperplate’s latest release, ars poetica, is a Bandcamp-only release. If you like “outnumbered”, I’m pretty sure you’ll like the rest of the songs on this album, so go ahead and buy it! You can also join the copperplate community on Bandcamp for updates from Lauren on new songs.
Hi Wendy, I'm a Denver, Colorado radio dj playing a lot of dreampop and shoegaze. There is talk that Copperplate is ai-generated music. I've been scouring the web looking for information on them and the only source I can find is your post. Lauren Grace's latest single, "Kiss Me", a song by Sixpence None The Richer, now has me doubting that they are real. Can you confirm that this band is truly human?
