Microchimères by Dufourd & Demoulin
Described as “an improbable mix of folk, ambient, musique concrète and experimental electronics, sprinkled with spontaneous incursions from friends, neighbours, and family members,” Microchimères by Frédéric Dufourd and Julien Demoulin is both surprising and relaxing. Flute mingles with delicately plucked and flickering sounds that gain meaning through suspensions of time. Interestingly, the compositions of Microchimères were inspired by two different books: Working by Studs Terkel and Of Walking in Ice by Werner Herzog.
Microchimères was released by three:four records on November 21, 2025. The duo’s first collaboration, Entre Chien et Loup, a slightly more drone-intense album, I would argue, appeared in 2022 on Rusted Tone Recordings. Perhaps it is “Comme Un Souffle” from Microchimères with its sweeping, slightly distorted drone force that connects the two albums.
Julien Demoulin has released a number of ambient works, independently and collaboratively, over the last few years. He reflects on the result of his recent collaboration with Frédéric as “adventurous, but also warm and welcoming”.
Sensibly avoiding certain social media platforms, Julien Demoulin’s music can be found on Bandcamp and his music news via his independent newsletter. You can buy Microchimères on limited edition cassette for a very reasonable EUR 10.
