(clouds) KristalStoelen by ZONDERWERK
(clouds) KristalStoelen is a 3+ minute soundscape by ZONDERWERK - you’ll hear the song in episode 7 of _____ mood. [coming 7 August]
ZONDERWERK is a duo from Ghent, Belgium, Linde Carrijn and Dijf Sanders, that creates sound for visual and performance art.
The instrumental, which translates roughly to (clouds) CrystalChairs in English, has a sort of ‘cloudy with interference’ feel to it. You’ll find the song on ZONDERWERK’s debut album ‘babel’ which was released in March 2023 by Dauw, a “Ghent based tape label”.
“The track is made in one take with an old 13-bit sampler,” said ZONDERWERK. “The album is actually made for a performance with miniature architecture. So, each track has its own scene and place in the performance.”
Music for mini architecture?
Yes.
“It’s a theatre performance from Belgium, but it also plays abroad. It’s called babel, by Steve Salembier.”
babel is described by LOD muziektheater in Ghent as a “portrait of a city” where Salembier’s scaled models, photos, video and projection “portray how the relationships between individuals and their living environments are fundamentally changed and how we are subject to extreme conditions”.
Steve Salembier is an artist, actor, director and architect working at the intersection of visual and performance art. Image + imagination and time + space are the main themes he tends to work with.
Words and music can only go so far here, so check out the short video about babel and some of the other interesting work* that ZONDERWERK is doing.
You can also order babel from Dauw via Bandcamp - it’s a lovely limited edition LP pressed on clear vinyl.
*the words ‘zonder’ and ‘werk’ crudely translate to ‘without work’ in English, but clearly ZONDERWERK does plenty of work, much of it ‘bijzonder’ or ‘unique’ in English.
